(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–A man facing felony animal cruelty charges allegedly beat his pit bull Kilo for months, using a hammer handle and a rock. The dog survived, with broken ribs and a swollen head.
Paul Cozart, 30, Kilo’s owner, faces a year in prison.
The District Attorney’s office says he beatings took place over several months and were observed by others on at least three occasions. In mid-October, the dog was seized from Cozart’s home–the first time that has ever been done in Clark County–and checked by a veterinarian.
“Animal abuse is a serious offense that will not be tolerated,” said District Attorney Steve Wolfson. “We take all allegations of abuse very seriously and pursue criminal charges, when appropriate.”
County investigators say the alleged abuse was reported to Animal Control in August and again in October by neighbors.
When Animal Control visited the home to speak with Cozart and his wife, they reported the animal was active and playfull. However, officials determined the reports of repeated abuse warranted seizing the dog so it could be examined.
Conviction for cruelty to animals is punishable by 1 to 5 years in prison plus a $10,000 fine.
