PHOENIX (CBS Las Vegas/AP) — A Phoenix man has been arrested on an animal cruelty charge after reportedly throwing rocks at his dog.
Phoenix police say 32-year-old Omar Beltran Nunez was taken into custody Friday.
Officers responded to the area of 5600 West Lewis Avenue after someone called to say a dog was yelping and barking in a home’s backyard.
One of the officers reported seeing Nunez throw large rocks and a piece of concrete like a baseball pitcher at a dog.
Police say one of the rocks hit the dog, which was tied to two tires with a piece of wire.
The officer ordered Nunez to stop throwing rocks, but he instead picked up a shovel and allegedly swung it at the 3-year-old dog.
Nunez told police that he threw rocks at the dog because it ran away the night before.
